Barcode generator

Choose a format, enter a number or text and download your barcode as a PNG or SVG image ready to print.

Create your barcode

Enter 12 digits and the generator calculates the check digit, or all 13 digits to verify it. Your barcode is created in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to create a barcode

The generator above turns a number or text into a barcode image. You do not need an account or the app to create and download it.

  1. Choose a format

For products sold in shops, choose EAN-13, or EAN-8 for small packs. Use UPC-A when a partner asks for a 12-digit code. For SKUs, stock and other internal labels, choose Code 128.

  2. Enter a number or text

For EAN and UPC, enter the number without its check digit and the generator calculates it. If you include the check digit, the generator checks that it is correct. Spaces between digits are removed.

  3. Check and download

Choose Generate barcode and compare the number under the bars with the one you meant to enter. Download a PNG for documents and labels, or an SVG for printing at a larger size. Scan a printed sample before you use it.

Which barcode format to choose

The right format depends on where the barcode will be scanned. Retail tills expect an EAN or UPC code, while Code 128 usually covers internal labels.

EAN-13

Retail products

A 13-digit barcode used on products sold in shops. The last digit is a check digit calculated from the previous 12.

EAN-8

Small products

A shorter 8-digit barcode for packs with no room for EAN-13. GS1 Srbija only assigns these numbers when an EAN-13 cannot fit on the product.

UPC-A

Products for North America

A 12-digit barcode common on products from the US and Canada. Like EAN-13, it ends with a check digit.

Code 128

Internal labels and stock

Encodes letters, digits and symbols and stays compact for longer values. It suits SKUs, shelf labels, company assets and internal shipments.

Code 39

Older equipment and simple labels

Supports capital letters, digits and a few symbols. It takes more space than Code 128, so choose it when your scanner or software specifically asks for Code 39.

Printing and size tips

A barcode scans most easily when it is sharp, large enough and surrounded by empty space.

  • Dark bars on a light background

Black on white is the safest combination. Do not print bars in red, orange or light yellow. Most scanners use red light and cannot tell those colours apart from the background.

  • Keep the white margin

The empty space to the left and right of the bars helps the scanner find where the code starts and ends. Do not crop the margin the generator adds, and keep text and borders away from the barcode.

  • Resize in proportion

Do not stretch the image in width or height only. Avoid shortening the bars unless you have to, because a shorter barcode is harder to scan.

  • EAN-13 size

According to the GS1 specification, a nominal EAN-13 barcode is about 37.29 mm wide including margins, with a narrowest bar of 0.33 mm. The narrowest bar can range from 0.264 to 0.660 mm.

  • SVG for larger prints

An SVG stays sharp at any size. A PNG can blur if you enlarge it a lot, so use it at its downloaded size or smaller.

  • Test a printed sample

Scan the barcode with the scanner or phone that will actually be used, on the paper or label you plan to use.

GS1 assigns product numbers

This generator draws a barcode for the number you enter, but it does not register a product number. To sell a product in retail, a company first gets a GS1 company prefix from its national GS1 organisation (GS1 Srbija in Serbia) and builds its product numbers from it. A made-up EAN-13 number can match another product's number.

FAQs

Barcode questions answered

Short answers about formats, check digits, printing and keeping barcode cards in the TapTapp app.

Is the barcode generator free?

Yes. You create and download barcodes without an account or payment. The generator runs in your browser and does not send the number or text you enter.

What is the check digit in an EAN-13 barcode?

It is the last, thirteenth digit. It is calculated from the first 12 digits and helps the scanner detect a misread number. If you enter 12 digits, the generator calculates and adds the check digit. If you enter 13, it checks the last digit and shows an error if it is wrong.

Can I make up an EAN-13 number for my product?

You can draw a barcode for any valid number, but a retail product number should come from the GS1 system. In Serbia, a company applies to GS1 Srbija for a company prefix and builds its product numbers from it. For labels scanned only in your own system, use Code 128.

What is the difference between Code 128 and Code 39?

Both formats encode letters and digits. Code 128 supports lowercase and capital letters and more symbols, and takes less space for the same text. Code 39 only supports capital letters, digits and a few symbols. Choose Code 39 only when your scanner or software asks for it.

Why does the generator reject accented letters?

Code 128 and Code 39 encode a basic character set without accented letters such as č, š or é. Replace them with plain letters, or use a code made of digits and unaccented letters.

Should I download a PNG or an SVG?

Use a PNG for documents, presentations and printing at its downloaded size. An SVG is a vector image that stays sharp at any size, so it is the better choice for labels, packaging and professional printing.

Why won't my barcode scan?

Check that you chose the format the scanner expects and that the number is correct. The barcode must not be blurred, stretched, cropped or too small. Leave white space around the bars and print them in a dark colour on a light background. If the barcode is on a phone screen, turn up the brightness.

How do I save a barcode card in TapTapp?

Open the add-card flow in the TapTapp app and scan the barcode on the card or from an image in your gallery. If the card only has a number, enter it and TapTapp will prepare a barcode. Open the saved card on your phone and present its code at the point of use.

Keep your barcode cards in TapTapp

Add a card by scanning its barcode or an image from your gallery. If the card only has a number, enter it and TapTapp will prepare a barcode to show at the point of sale.
